Well, I have some news!!! I am going to China! My research project will be in south central China on a biodiversity restoration project with the ultimate goal of reintroducing the Indochinese Tiger! Yep, a tiger reintroduction project!
I do not have a lot of the details yet. My professor initially sent me information in December, but I never realized he thought I was “definitely going” as I had been approved by him. I was still under the impression I would need to interview with a group of other candidates for the two research spots. Alas, last Thursday I decided to approach him and ask directly if I was selected. Turns out the answer was “YES!” and had been ever since he confirmed the funding was approved. I am learning a LOT about “lost in translation” here in Europe.
Our research time line is April-July, but I do not know the exact dates of when I will be in China just yet. Should know more in the next week or two. I will get to focus more on wildlife conservation, possibly the role of insurance in compensating locals for any damages that occur at the expense of preserving wildlife (ie, a tiger eats your cow, you get paid for the cow so you do not go kill the tiger – similar to the wolves reintroduced into Yellowstone).
As with the open invitation in Amsterdam, should anyone decide to visit Asia while I am in China, give me a buzz:-) Life is funny. Never thought a year ago that I would be living in Amsterdam now. Or that I would next be going to China.
(Apologies to the Peace425ed bloggers for the repeat post:-)).
